ROUTE 62: The Ultimate Road Trip: Garden Route

Route 62 is a tourist route in South Africa, voted by CNN Travel as the best road trip in the World,  that meanders between Cape Town, Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route, and Port Elizabeth, offering the scenic alternative to the N2 highway. Route 62 is named for the R62 provincial route, which it follows from Montagu to Humansdorp, but the tourist route extends further along other highways to Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

Also known as the Wine Route, Route 62 leads through the wine-growing areas of Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein Karoo and is thus one of the longest wine routes in the world. Activities along Route 62 include wine tours, safari drives, tribal art, cultural tours, museums, hiking, mountain climbing, 4×4 routes, canoeing, horse riding, ostrich riding, fishing, caving, and even Skydiving.

A serendipitous combination of world-class beaches, iridescent lagoons and indigenous forests interspersed with welcoming towns, and a simple, scenic, ocean-hugging highway guarantees the Garden Route inclusion in every roundup of ultimate four-wheeled adventures .The Garden Route follows the N4 highway between Mossel Bay and Storms River, with scenic stops including George, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. It’s typically accessed from Cape Town, and the 250-mile drive to the starting point can take in the heritage sights in Swellendam or whale-watching in Hermanus. 

After the famous Cape Town Carnival celebration on arrival day, we start our trip to Oudtshoorn the "ostrich capital of the world".  Here we spend 2 nights at the gorgeous La Plume Boutique Guest House, and explore the ostrich farms and the Cango Caves. Then we start our Garden Route in Mossel Bay, and explore along the coast to George for 2 nights. George is the largest city in the Garden Route, a scenic stretch of the Western Cape characterized by mountainous scenery and breathtaking coastline, and finally to Knysna,  an exciting array of land and water based experiences within the unmatched natural beauty of indigenous forests, miles of beaches, rivers and lakes that border the town. Here we spend 3 nights as we celebrate Knysna Pride, or Peacock Pride.
